FNV Announces Three-Day Public Transport Strike in September Over Heavy Work Scheme

Members of the FNV will strike for three days in September, targeting public transport. They are calling on the government to develop plans that allow people to retire from heavy work sooner. An FNV spokesperson expressed hope that other unions would join the strike.

On Tuesday, September 10, there will be a short work stoppage affecting city transport in The Hague, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. The following day, NS staff will delay the start of their work until 08:00. On Thursday, September 12, actions will shift to regional transport.

A spokesperson for Dutch Railways stated that the impact on passengers is currently unclear.

“Starting Mildly”

“We are beginning with mild actions in public transport,” said Eric Vermeulen, director of FNV City Transport. “But if the government continues to ignore us, more robust actions will follow in October.”

The FNV and other unions are demanding a new Early Retirement Scheme (RVU) after failed negotiations with the government and employers. Strikes for a better heavy work scheme are already occurring in various sectors, including the police.

The RVU allows eligible workers to retire three years early. However, there is widespread dissatisfaction with the current scheme, set to expire at the end of 2025, as many people struggle financially under its terms.

According to the FNV, thousands of Dutch Railways employees alone are engaged in heavy work.
